It has an area of 22,863 sq. m, and its highest peak reaches 139 m. When speaking of the island, it is impossible not mention to Ba Ham Lake, a famous spot which people had known long time ago.

Cong Tay Island

Cong Tay Island is compared with the Cinderella in a fairy tale. Cam Pha Coal, Construction and Wharf Company built the site into a destination for sigh-seeing and relaxation at weekend. Near the beach is a network of all-conveniences rest houses and restaurants. From the rest houses you can go to the beach on a red brick paved road lined on the two sides by straight rows of coconuts. You can relax by lying on a hammock under the shade of coconut while having a view of the sea or reading books.
Cong Tay has becoming an attractive tourist destination. Rest houses and service facilities are being updated and completed to cater to the needs of tourists.

Bồ Hòn Island

When speaking of the beautiful islands of Hạ Long Bay, one must speak of Bồ Hòn Island or Soap-Berry Tree Island, not only because of its splendid scenery, but also as it is one of the largest in the area.
There are many grottoes located here, such as the Surprise, Luồn, Virgin and Male grottoes. There is also a concentration of high mountains with vertical cliffs like citadel wall; mountains follow closely make a huge beautiful watercolour picture on the sea. There are various species of plants such as benjamin fig trees, cycads and orchids… and animals are monkeys, deer and chamois. Perhaps, Bồ Hòn Island famous for the grotto system hiding inside it. Each of them has their own marvellous beauty and is related to the moved legends.

Ha Long – Bay of the Descending Dragon

Situated in the North-East region of Vietnam, 151 km North-East of Hanoi, Halong Bay is in the Gulf of Tonkin stretching through Halong City, Cam Pha Town, and a part of the island district of Van Don. Halong Bay borders Cat Ba Island in the southwest, the East Sea in the east, and the mainland, creating a 120 km coastline.

Halong Bay is made up of 1,969 islands of various sizes. There are two kinds of islands, limestone and schist, concentrated in two main zones: the southeast (belonging to Bai Tu Long Bay), and the southwest (belonging to Halong Bay). This densely concentrated zone of rock islands, world famous for its spectacular scenery of grottoes and caves, forms the central zone of Halong Bay, which has twice been acclaimed as the World Heritage by the UNESCO.

Ha Long – Bay of the Descending Dragon

Ha Long literally means Descending Dragon(s). This name is associated with a legend that has been handed down for generations. According to this, during the earliest days of founding the country the Viet people were attacked by foreign invaders through the sea line. Knowing this in advance, God wanted to help the Viet people to expel the enemy by sending Mother Dragon and her children down to Vietnam. When the invaders were about to launch massive attacks against the mainland, the dragons descended in flocks from the sky. They spat out innumerable pearls which changed into jade stone islands the moment they touched the water. These islands linked together to form firm citadels that checked the enemy’s advance and smashed their vessels to pieces.

Introduction Halong-5-300x252

After the invaders were driven out, Mother Dragon and her Child Dragons did not return to Heaven because they fell in love with the beauty of the water and the sea. They decided to remain on earth at the place where the battle had occurred. The spot where the Mother Dragon landed was Ha Long, and where the Child Dragons came down and bowed their heads to their mother was Bai Tu Long. The place where their tails violently wagged was called Bach Long Vi, now known as Tra Co Peninsula with its soft sandy beach stretching many kilometers.

System of Islands and Caves

Introduction Bai-Chay-6-300x230

Ha Long Bay consists of numerous islands and peaks of different heights, arranged in a zigzag pattern, like the figure of a dragon splashing in the water. This is a hidden bay with a sea area of 1,500 square kilometers along a realm of thousands of islands (mostly limestone) naturally grouped. Many islands are named after the figures that they resemble, such as Frog, Elephant, Fighting Cock, Turtle or Roof Island that may appeal to the imagination of tourists.  There are two bigger islands, Tuan Chau and Cat Ba, where there have been permanent inhabitants. Both of them have tourist facilities, including hotels and beaches. There are a number of wonderful beaches on the smaller islands.
Ha Long Bay is a limestone area with many wonderful caves, such as Dau Go, Bo Nau, Trong, Trinh Nu and Sung Sot Cave, each with their own fascinating legend.

Biodiversity

Introduction sungsot-cave5
Ha Long Bay includes two ecosystems: tropical moist evergreen rainforest, and a marine and coastal ecosystem. The bay treasures many valuable specialties, such as fish, abalone and shrimps of different kinds. On the islands there are various kinds of birds and animals, including mostly local species of chicken, blue birds, monkeys, bantams, antelopes and iguanas. Pearls and coral can be collected on some islands.

Ba Hầm Lake

The lake is a system comprising three wide and round pits, linked together by a narrow and meandering tunnel. Stalactites hang from the ceiling in a myriad of strange, coloured forms. The silence is disturbed only by the sounds of the boat’s oars. On the island are many species of plants such as orchids, benjamin figs, banyans and cycads, which blossom throughout the year. It is also the home of yellow-haired monkeys, birds, flying squirrels and bats. Under the deep blue surface of the water are the animated lives of shrimp and fish.

Although 25 km from the shore, it has long been considered an ideal tourism zone. The entrance is a open semi-circular hole in the flat stone wall on the north-west side of the island, 4 to 5 m above the sea. Starting from the entrance, tourists enter the first tunnel, which boasts a forest of stalactites and stalagmites in different shapes and various colours. They fall down the water surface like the roots of banyan or ficus trees. The deeper one pushes into the tunnel, the darker it becomes. The river is deep yet so clear that one can see shoals of fish swimming. Some 100 m from the entrance one finds a shaft of light coming from the roof of the tunnel, which reveals different kinds of orchids clinging to the cliff, cycads growing here and there. In the southeast cliff of the second tunnel there grows an old carambola tree, which bears fruits all year round.

Tourists can find groups of monkeys, flying squirrels, or silver-headed parrots gathering in its branches. Lying one cliff away from the second one, the third tunnel is home to various species of bats and butterflies. Amidst the tranquil atmosphere, you feel like boating in an abyssal well walled by mountains. Ba Hầm Lake is one of the beauty spots of Hạ Long Bay.

Ho Dong Tien cave

Unlike all the other caves in the area of Ha Long Bay, Ho Dong Tien cave relics of many hanging on the walls of the cave, which forms the “attic” long. That’s part of the cave floor were relatively cohesive in nature CaCO3 sure that the background has been eroded by groundwater flow occurs in the cave over thousands of years. If the detailed study of the surviving portions of the cargo may learn more process-level rise, lowering of sea level in the Quaternary Halong.

It is of great significance for the restoration of historical geology of the area. In many stalactite cave is a column marking the current falls, as a basis to predict that, below the current row has a base stock, and there are stalagmites grow up to support the columns after above. There are things, hang the bottom half is still filled with sediment. That was a mystery to be explored. From the second compartment of the cave Ho Tien has a two-door pool, surrounding a limestone mountain surrounded. Halong people call this type of farm pond. In essence this is a karst funnel with the bottom were flooded. It is a special ecological environment, have recently isolated through sea trade with the system of underground caves and cracks in the limestone. Thus, in the farming systems are often unique organisms that can include many endemic species.

Go through all three compartments of the cave, which left a deep impression of us is its pristine of stalactites. Previously known cave Ho Tien each other is open to tourists for a short time. Then management for travelers in the Gulf does not hang anymore for protection purposes, only the research team will be allowed into the cave. That helped the cave, especially the formation of stalactites in the cave, keeping the natural state, are not harmed by the visits and the technical means attached.

The mass show of stalactites here all seem mysterious his glitter. Every million calcite crystals light up when there is magic in the mild light. That in exploiting caves have never gone, many blocks are as human hands make opaque, smooth, thin, shiny black. The magic of sparkling stalactites put on the inside corner of the pane Tuesday, where a beam of large stalactites hanging down to create a setting that does not think any better known as Jade Bowl. It represents a pretty small crater inside a pearl equivocal. Red-brown mass of millions of breast associated with calcite crystals sparkling reflections of light, fanciful. This masterpiece of nature that needs to be properly protected so that everyone has the opportunity to admire …

Tam Cung Grotto

The Tam Cung Grotto or Three-palace Grotto is situated in the centre of Hạ Long Bay, 5 km from Sung Sot Grotto to the northeast. The grotto itself is divided into three parts; after threading the stone cracks, you find the first chamber. Many beautiful forms can be garnered from the rocky shapes.

Continuing on to the second chamber, the bumpy way leads to a spring with fresh water. The last room contains further incredible stone depictions. Tam Cung Grotto lies in May Den, a luxuriant island nearly isolated from other islands. Mây Ðèn’s cliffs are extremely vertical, while its forest is flourishing.

Entering its first chamber, one can hear the sound of t’rung or stone musical instrument from near and far. Pushing further inside, tourists meet a “fairy” whose white beard flies in the wind climbing the mountain. High in the wall of the chamber there stand three statues representing prosperity, happiness and longevity, looking down at the earthly world. From the ceiling falls down a stalactite which resembles the bud of a hydrangea among a garden of stone flowers. Going through a narrow passage, one comes to a natural museum of lively animals, including lions, seals, even god of the sea. In the middle of the second chamber lies a stream murmuring all year round, making the two surrounding cliffs rustle. In the last chamber, tourists can find an imposing bas-relief in which are carved elaborate strange images, lying layer after layer in a harmonious layout. One can figure out flowers, bamboos, stone curtains, or sleeping elephants.

THIEN CUNG GROTTO

It is situated on the south-west side the bay, 4 km from the wharf outside of  Ha Long City. The way to Thien Cung is a perilous one, covered on both sides by thick forest. After entering a narrow gate, the grotto’s 130-meter-long girth opens up.

I/ THIEN CUNG GROTTO INFORMATION

Getting in we are more astonished in front of the very animated and splendid beauty which is made from stalactite. On the east wall of the grotto, there is a grandiose and imposing picture with characters of tales.
Going out of the Thien Cung Grotto, we have a sensation of just watching a unique, meticulous, interesting fine-art museum which is made by nature, get out of the imagine, ability and intellect of man. This grotto is recently discovered, one of the most beautiful grottoes in Hạ Long Bay.Legend has it, that beautiful young lady named Mây (cloud), caught the eye of the Dragon Prince and he fell in love with her. They were betrothed, and their wedding lasted seven days and seven nights in the very centre of the grotto.
In honour of the wedding, small dragons flew about through the stalactites and stalagmites, elephants danced together happily, snakes twined themselves around trees and two stone lions danced with their manes flowing in the wind. A large elephant, smartly dressed, waited for the bride and the groom. The genies of the south and north stars also came to attend the banquet, and the atmosphere was definitely animated and lively. All these scenes have been seemingly fossilized in the grotto. In the centre are four large pillars supporting the “roof of heaven.” From the base to the top, many strange images seem to live in the stone: birds, fish, flowers and even scenes of human life. On the north wall of the grotto a group of fairies seem to dance and sing in honour of the wedding. Under the immeasurably high roof, stalactites make a natural stone curtain. Somewhere there is the sound of a drum beating, but it is actually just the noise made by the wind blowing through stone.
Arriving at the last partition of the grotto, a natural gushing stream of water babbles throughout the year. Here are three small ponds of clear water. Legend has it, that this was where Mây bathed her 100 children, bringing them up wisely and happily into adolescence. One path meanders out of the grotto; it was the way Mây, together with 50 of her children, took to harvest new lands. The 50 remaining children, together with their father, were left to build the native land. Left behind by the mother was the natural stream described above.

Ti Top Island

An interesting story…

In 1962, this tiny island had the honor of receiving a visit from astronaut Ghermann Titov, a hero of the former Soviet Union, accompanied by President Ho Chi Minh. To perpetuate the remembrance of their visit, Uncle Ho named the place Ti Top Island. It has now become an attractive beach for tourists and has various tourist services.
Thirty-five years afterwards, in 1997, Ti Top returned to the island having his name. Deeply moved, he wrote in the souvenir book of the Management Board of Halong Bay: “My deepest thanks to destiny, which has allowed me to come back to this tiny island.” It has become a beach attracting many visitors.

ti top beach Titop Island and Beach

Then being an attractive island…

Located about 14 km east from Bai Chay Wharf, Ti Top Beach takes the shape of a crescent encompassing the island. Small though it might be, it wins kudos for its quiet and airy atmosphere, as well as its alluring landscape.
The beach boasts pristine white sand, clear and blue water and small waves, which make it ideal for recreational activities like swimming and other sea sports. At present, there has a bar in the island which also provides swimming costumes, floats and lukewarm shower. Fresh water was carried to the island from inland. Swimming at Ti Top Beach is really enjoyable. After swimming, you can enjoy fresh sea food specialties in an ideal environment of immense sky and sunshine.
This beach is very beautiful and is well worth a visit to cool off when the heat starts to get to you. If you spend a day at the beach and elect to take a deckchair, you will be asked to buy a baguette, some lovely pineapple or a drink; otherwise you will have to pay for the seat. During the full moon, you are able to wander around until late at night.
The island has become a popular tourist destination. On summer holidays, the famous beach of Ti Top Island cools off visitors heading to Quang Ninh Province and you will surely have a chance to join in an interesting journey to the natural wonder…
